While the grand and traditional borders with elaborate and pure zaris are the hallmark of any magnificent Kanchipuram saree, you can also get trendy, contemporary and classic silk sarees without borders as well. These borderless sarees or without border saree as they are called are no less grand or vibrant. 

 

Every Kanchipuram silk saree tells a story. The colours are symbolic, the motifs are based on different cultural references while borders are inspired by the temples and temple city of Kanchipuram. The silk sarees are characterised by luminous textures , rich palette and pure gold and silver zaris. But the silk sarees without border are a contemporary twist on the typical traditional Kanchipuram silk saree. They may not be as opulent as a bridal saree or elaborate with heavy zaris and borders. Yet the borderless saree as its called personifies grace and is delicate and subtle and has contrasting colours and patterns between the main body of the saree and the pallu. The handloom sarees are characterised by geometric motifs and delicate floral designs. The colours and patterns on the blouse are also in contrast to the main body as well. They are lightweight, pleasing, elegant and are befitting for any occasion- even if it’s a fleeting moment to dress up for no reason except to look and feel beautiful.

 

The concept of a saree without borders, also called borderless sarees is not new. It has been around even earlier, however they are more popular today as it can be worn anytime A without border silk saree is a perfect blend of style and tradition. Here the silk sarees without border catch your attention with the striking contrast of colours and motifs between the main body of the saree, the pallu and the blouse as well. Here the part of the fabric which is the blouse can be detached from the main saree and the motifs and colours are in contrast and juxtaposed against the palette of the main saree. The pallu also stands out from the body with the intricate patterns as well. From geometric patterns to abstract curves, floral designs to dainty details, there is a contrast in motifs as well. You can buy without border Kanjivaram silk sarees online . Without border sarees or borderless sarees as they are called have different motifs and weaves as well. For instance you can get sarees with stripes and checks and they are called the Striped Saree or the Checked Saree. Geometric patterns like stripes, checks, dotted lines stripes, window pane checks, pinstripes among others have always been one of the favourite motifs of weavers on the handwoven silk sarees to showcase balance.  There are stripes and checks called Kattam and Varis in Tamil and they are embellished with miniature buttas and buttis inside them. The simple butti saree is another classic but eternal favourite among Kanchipuram silk sarees. These iconic motifs woven in gold are more than just dots and they represent many patterns like kolams or tilakams or imagery of fruits and birds or even just simple coins.

 

Paidmadi or Payadi refers to the basket weave or the chatai weave which is one of the most traditional yet stunning silk sarees without border. Here two similar colour yarns are used to create a texture and pattern that resembles that of the chatai weave which almost looks real.

 

The Half and Half Sarees using the Korvai is one of the most trendy among silk sarees without border. It has two main sections - the body which focusses primarily on the pleats and the pallu.  There is a striking contrast in colours between the two as they are dyed in two bold colours. Some of the bold dual toned colour combinations are black and red, olive and yellow, green and pink among others. The Partly Sarees are trending again now and are unique and stylish without borders. Inspired by the costume of Bharatanatyam dancers, these sarees also use the Korvai technique to create a fascinating blend of colours. Here the pleats in front and the pallu draped are in the same colour as well. 

 

The Rising border sarees seem to have a border but they are different from the traditional border woven with zari at the bottom. In these sarees, the width of the border gradually increases as it “rises” higher and blends with the pallu of the saree. The contrast of colours and motifs can be seen here too.
