A handloom Banarasi Silk Saree is not just a garment. It is the result of weeks and sometimes months of work by a weaver sitting at a pit loom in Varanasi, threading up to 5,600 individual silk yarns by hand. The gold and silver zari running through the fabric is not printed or embroidered on top. It is woven directly into the silk, interlocked thread by thread, which is why a well-made Banarasi holds its design for decades without fading or fraying.

The craft earned a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2009 — India's way of protecting a tradition that belongs to Banaras and nowhere else. Types of Banarasi Silk Sarees — Weaves, Techniques and What Sets Each Apart

Banarasi Brocades

The heaviest and most formal of the Banarasi family. Pure Katan silk woven with dense gold or silver zari in patterns like jaal (full-body lattice), butidar (scattered motifs), shikargah (hunting scenes) and Kadwa — a specialist technique where each motif is drawn on the loom and raised by hand, making it the densest and most bridal of all Banarasi work. These are the sarees brides reach for. They take the longest to make and last the longest to wear. A good Brocade Banarasi Saree with Kadwa work can take two to three months to complete.

Banarasi Jamdani

One of the most demanding handloom techniques in the world — and one of the rarest. The weaver works without a mechanical guide. Each motif is placed by eye and hand, using an extra weft thread to create designs that seem to float inside the silk. No two Jamdani sarees are exactly alike. It is GI-protected in its own right and has been recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.

Khaddi Georgette

A lighter base, a softer drape — but still with the full Banarasi zari work on body and pallu. Khaddi Georgette suits sangeets, receptions and festive occasions where you want the richness of Banaras without the weight of heavy Katan silk. It travels well and handles Indian summers better than a brocade.

Rangkat

The name means colour cut. Two different coloured threads are interlocked during weaving so each face of the fabric shows a different palette — the body one colour, the pallu another, the border a third. Rangkat is not mass-produced. The weavers who still do it are few. We consider it one of the more special finds in our Banarasi range.

Tanchoi and Vaskat

Tanchoi is a satin-weave Banarasi where the zari forms a smooth, almost embossed surface — richer looking than standard brocade, subtler than Kadwa. Vaskat combines two or more coloured wefts to create geometric or floral all-over patterns without a separate ground thread. Both are specialist weaves that fewer retailers carry.

Banarasi Tissue Silk Sarees

Tissue Banarasi sarees are woven with a fine zari thread running through the weft, giving the fabric a subtle metallic shimmer and a far lighter hand-feel than a Katan or Brocade base. The gold or silver tissue effect catches light differently depending on the angle, which is one reason these sarees are often chosen for daytime functions, cocktail events, and destination weddings where a heavier drape isn't practical.
