This naturally-dyed, handwoven Kanchipuram silk saree is a masterpiece for its blend of colour and design.
Lac resin (arraku) has been used to colour the body a rich crimson. The gold zari kattam (checked) pattern is the most distinctive part of the saree; each check features a different motif, from vanki (armlet) and kuyil kann (koel’s eye) to pai maadi (basket weave) and arai madam (half-diamond). The design shows off the skill of the master weaver. The motifs of the body have been created using Indian madder (manjistha), while the aquamarine highlights are created with indigo overdyed with marigold flowers.
The kuyil kann motifs on the border and pallu use threads seeped in gum arabic, while indigo and marigold have been used to create the vanki patterns interspersed with gold zari. The nuanced design and rich colours make this saree a festive favourite
