The alluring blue tone of this handwoven Kanchipuram silk saree has been derived from one of the oldest natural dyes - indigo.
Interestingly, indigo has been used not only to colour the body but also the thilagam motifs that dot it. Jasmine buds (malli moggu) have been overlaid on the body in pure gold zari. The layered border features a fine selection of motifs - mayil (peacock) and manga (mango) patterns that have been coloured green using mulberry leaves; stripes and manga motifs in pure gold zari; kuyil kann (koel’s eye) coloured bright pink using lac. These patterns are recreated on the contrasting pink pallu, where they are rimmed withzari stripes and manga motifs. Luminous with gold zari and contrasting tones, this Kanchipuram silk saree is a fitting tribute to the richness of indigo, the world’s most coveted natural dye.
