Self Border Sarees

When you think of a Kanchipuram silk saree, you imagine the most magnificent craftsmanship by the master weavers in brilliant hues with ornate motifs, elaborate borders, glittering zaris in gold and silver and contrasting designs on the borders and pallus. But there are also stunning Kanchipuram silk sarees which are called self border sarees. While the temple borders are most common, there are several other patterns as well. The traditional Kanchipuram silk saree has every inch of the lustrous silk fabric woven with patterns that can mesmerise you. But not every Kanchipuram silk saree is grand but even in its simplicity, it packs in grace and elegance. And one of them is the self border sarees also called monochrome sarees or single colour sarees.

The term self border saree is self-explanatory. It basically means that the border of the saree matches the colour of the body of the saree as well. There are silk sarees with borders handwoven with the warp and weft of the same shade and have an unbroken palette. In a typical traditional Kanchipuram silk saree, the grand borders stand out with golden zaris and the vibrant colours and designs which are contrasted with the colours and patterns of the main saree like in the Korvai silk sarees which showcases the skill of the weavers.

However in the monochrome saree or the self border Kanchipuram silk sarees, there is only one colour saree as the border is made from the same silk thread and the colours are the same . Hence these single colour sarees are different from the korvai saree but they are elegant, sophisticated and graceful while retaining the traditional essence of the Kanchipuram silk saree. These handloom sarees are classic yet contemporary, light weight and lustrous and can also be worn for both formal and informal occasions.

The self border saree or the monochrome saree are no less beautiful. They may be simple but they are elegant and graceful and they are homogeneous and add harmony and balance to the entire with the use of single colour. The understated and minimalistic look add to the overall style as well. The monochrome silk saree made from a single colour of silk stands out without any contrasting colours in the border and these are also called one colour sarees . The colours used are also solid colours and they can be shades of red, green, blue, pink, yellow and black among others. The monochrome sarees or the self border sarees are very versatile and timeless and although they are seamless , they blend beautifully with all types of Kanchipuram silk sarees with geometric patterns like plains, checks and stripes , or the traditional buttas or even the classical thread work sarees. Although the colour of the self border sarees matches the hues of the main body of the saree, the borders are no less beautiful. They are grand and opulent and stand out in pure zari, adding a dash of luminosity to the self border saree. You can usually find traditional borders with floral motifs or geometric designs but they are intricate but delicate without being too overpowering or ornate. There are different types of borders as well in this monochrome silk sarees. The double side equal border means the wide border is visible on both sides unlike the single border and it is of equal size on both sides giving it a uniform look. The Rising border sarees seem to have a border but they are different from the traditional border woven with zari at the bottom. In these sarees, the width of the border gradually increases as it “rises” higher and blends with the pallu of the saree.

The Self Border Saree or the monochrome saree may have an unbroken palette but the elaborate and ornate designs in pure zari stand out, creating a distinction between the border and pallu. The monotone colour highlights the design further making it unique among other silk sarees. With opulent borders and pallus and fascinating motifs, the single colour saree is one of the most sought after among Kanchipuram silk sarees.
